Major Giants are 2014 Playoff Champions!
This was the final game of the 2014 NCLBL playoff tournament (and regular season) featuring the Giants against the Reds. In the final regular season standings the Reds had finished the season one game ahead of the Giants. “May the Best Team Win,” certainly had meaning for this game as the Giants and Reds were the two best teams in this tournament based on their regular season records.
This game was made more difficult because some players had left the area for various reasons. Thus, each team played with the bare minimum of only 8 players, as no minor league call-ups were allowed this year. Had any one of the eligible players not made it to the game on time or gotten hurt during the game and had to leave, his or her team would have had to forfeit. Both of these situations nearly happened either prior to or during the game.
Rather than the automatic out due to the missing ninth player, both mangers used common sense and agreed that rule would be suspended for this game since both teams were in the same predicament.
Since this game was played with the minimum complement of players we will defer going into details of how the runs were scored.
Congratulations to Andrew McGaffigan, on your home run for the Reds and which allowed you to tie for the Major Home Run crown. Despite the score, the Reds never gave up and gave their full effort for the whole game.
Although it was a solid team effort by the Giants, we want to commend Brendon Lewis and Gabriel Taylor (relief) for their pitching efforts. High-fives go to Max Hunter and Je’mi Pearson who broke out of their batting slumps. Good job by Percilla Wilkins for her sacrifice grounder to move a runner into scoring position.
We should also celebrate what a great regular season NCLBL had this year. It was one of the most competitive seasons in a long time. Our Mayor’s Cup representative, the Dodgers, wasn’t even determined until the final week of the regular season. The Cubs who finished four games behind were only two wins away from going .500 for the season. The Braves were only one win away from a .500 season. This year the old adage was so very true; “On any given day, any team could beat any other team.”
Congratulations players and coaches for a fun and exciting year. Good Luck to our Summer League teams.
Most of all, THANK YOU PARENTS for your continued support of NCLBL!
