WINNING High Bidder: Lynda Janul, $300
![]() Autographed Yaz ball. "HOF 1989" indicates his year of induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Click for larger version. |
Thanks to the generosity of Fred Fantini, long-time member of the Cambridge School Committee and sponsor of our league, we have obtained a baseball autographed by Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski. Yaz is the Red Sox' all-time leader in career RBIs, runs, hits, singles, doubles, total bases, and games played, and is second only to Ted Williams in home runs. In 1967 Yastrzemski led the Red Sox to the "Impossible Dream" pennant, was voted American League MVP, and won the Major League Triple Crown by leading the league in batting average, RBIs, and home runs. To this day no other major league player has won the Triple Crown! In 1989 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and his number "8" was retired by the Red Sox. |
This on-line auction will run through October 15, the date of our annual banquet.
The high bidder will receive the ball, a letter of authenticity, and a case.
All proceeds will go to support our league.
Submit your name, phone number, and bid to nclbl@comcast.net.
| Pedigree of the Ball
The authenticity of the autograph on the ball is beyond doubt. The autograph was obtained by Fred Frantini's nephew David Blank, co-owner of DB's Baseball & Softball Academy in North Andover. Carl Yastremski visited the Academy on numerous occasions in 2009 to give hitting tips to his grandson Mike Yastremski, then a senior at St. John's Prep. A Boston Globe article from February 4, 2009 that includes a picture of Yaz and his grandson at DB's Academy is available here. The high bidder will receive the original of this letter of authenticity from David Blank dated February 28, 2009. If further proof is required, compare our ball with one that was sold online by a sports memorabilia company for several hundred dollars:
