Minor Cubs 10 - Rockies 9

5/31/2014

Pitch counts
ROCKIES: Kevin - 46, Daniel - 45, Derek - 41
CUBS: Daniel Hargrove - 83, Myles Borher-Purnell - 35

Game Summary
In the much anticipated Rockies vs. Cubs game (originally scheduled for May 16th), the Cubs managed to come away with a W in a hard fought game.

It was rumored that this game may never be played as Mother Nature tried everything in her power to prevent a Cubs-Rockies matchup with two consecutive rain outs. Today she relented and the sun shone bright over the baseball diamond allowing but teams to play ball.

Both teams were understaffed and everyone had to play hard and cover a lot of ground today to make up for that.

While there were a lot of gutsy plays, there were few balls hit into the outfield and many very close plays at the bases made this one a true nail biter.

It is hard to pick key players as it appeared that everyone pitched in for both teams and either could have came away with the victory.
The Rockies shortstop did have an amazing play teaming up with their 1st baseman for the an out at 2nd base in the 3rd inning. This followed a magnificent play at 1st base where Cubs shortstop Roberto was just beaten in his hustle to get to the bag.

For the Cubs, Daniel Hargrove had a great day with some great pitching in coordination with catcher Kiernan Dillon as well as a great 2 RBI outfield hit.
Also for the Cubs Chisom Ayuk had a great day at 3rd base

Casey, Nicky MacKool, Kai Sikora, and Rowan Cahill each added singles (Rowan his first NCLBL hit) and Ben Berinsky had a triple to pace the Reds attack.

His legged out single led to the only Dodger run in the sixth and an outstanding catch in left field robbed Berinsky of extra bases and saved 2 runs in the fifth. Zoe Poklop chipped in a first inning triple and a single in the sixth, while Jaylend Thevenin singled in the fifth for the Dodgers.

Williams had 13 Ks over 4 plus innings and Gardiner 4 to seal the game for the Reds.

Major Giants 6 - Cubs 5

5/27/2014

Pitch Counts
CUBS:
Dante Fiorello-Lensch-39
Xavier Louis-Jaques-61
Drew Hyland – 36
Teto Santanillo – 19

GIANTS:
Gabriel Taylor-70
Eoin Rogers – 9

Game Summary
Wow What a Game!
The Cubs started the game with a double by Teto Santanillo.  A single by Drew Hyland got Santanillo home.  A passed ball moved Highland to second.  Another single by Xavier Louis-Jaques and a couple of passed balls and the Cubs had opened the game with a 3-run first inning.

In the top of the third the Cubs added another run to increase their lead to 4.  With no outs Dante Fiorello-Lensch reached first on a fielder’s choice.  With one out, Ross MacNeil also reached first on a fielder’s choice.  Marcus Randall then singled in Fiorello-Lensch with the Cub’s fourth run.

In the bottom of the third the Giants started to come back, scoring three runs in the inning.  Oliver Muz walked and eventually scored.  Gabriel Taylor and Mikie MacKool-Wiener walked setting the table for Eoin Rogers.  Rodgers hit a single that drove in Taylor and MacKool-Wiener.

In the top of the fourth and two outs, Santanillo reached on an error.  He got to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Hyland.  Cubs held a 5-3 lead.

Although not involved in the decision, Gabriel Taylor kept his cool and pitched hard from the first inning until he came off the mound at the end of the fifth inning, saving the Giants’ bullpen.

In the bottom of the fifth inning the Giants scored two runs to tie the game.  Rogers singled up the middle.  Brendon Lewis doubled to put runners at second and third.  Nathaniel Abreu singled to score Rogers and Lewis.   Tie game, 5-5, going into the last inning.

By this time the weather was miserable.  A light rain was falling and the temperature had dropped significantly.  Coaches and players on both sides were damp and cold.  Each team wanting to win, but no one was looking forward to extra innings.

Rogers now pitching in relief of Taylor struck out the first batter.  Muhamhed Mohmed hit a double to put the go ahead run in scoring position.  Next batter is out.  With the Cubs down to ultimately their final batter, Rogers assisted on a ground ball back to the pitcher with a throw to first to end the top half of the inning.

The first batter for the Giants, Will Bent singled.  He reached second on a passed ball.  The next batter, Priscilla Wilkins, walked.  Bent and Wilkins both move up a base on a passed ball.  Giants now have two runners in scoring position.  Next up is Rogers who hit a hard ground ball up the middle to score Bent and end the game with a walk-off single.

This was a hard fought game and all the players on both teams are to be commended for their endurance under less than ideal baseball conditions.

Thank you to all parents for supporting the players.

Minor Reds 8 - Cubs 3

5/19/2014

Pitch counts
REDS: Casey Williams 72, Seamus Gardiner 14, Ben Berinsky 44
CUBS: Lou Targoff 87, Myles Bohrer-Purnell 38, Daniel Hargrove 14

Game Summary
This began as the Casey and Lou show, as each team's aces were at their best.  Four and one-half innings had produced nothing but 0's on the scoreboard and very few runners on the bases.  Lou struck out 14 Reds with 4 walks, allowing a single hit to Casey.

Meanwhile Casey fanned 12 Cubs while yielding 2 walks and 2 hits, including a 1st inning double to Lou and a leadoff double to Sam Krpata in the second.

The bullpens didn't fair as well as the Cubs used 6 consecutive walks to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth.

The Reds then jumped on the Cubs bullpen for 8 in the top of the 6th aided by singles from Mark Holland and Seamus Gardiner and Ben Berinsky's bases clearing double.

Lou's second hit of the game, a walk and a single by Tyrou loaded the bases for the Cubs in the 6th before Ben settled in to strike out the side to give the Reds the comeback win.

Star of the Game through was clearly Lou Targoff. Great game Lou!
