Cubs 5 - Braves 2
Now this is what playoff baseball is all about. Two determined, hard fighting teams colliding for the playoff championships. These two teams were destined to meet at this stage, because they are very similar in makeup and regardless of the outcome; the NCLBL can be sure that the team that wins this series will be deserving of the title because it's going to be a tough series.
Tonight's Game One of the series saw the Cubs emerge victorious, but it was never going to be easy and required the Cubs pitching to be at the top of their game.
Cubs' pitchers Ari and Lou brought their A games;managing to keep the Braves hitters under wraps.
Ari threw a whopping 91 pitches and came within three outs of a complete game.
However pitching alone does not win a game and Aidan led off for the Cubs with a triple followed by an RBI sacrifice for Bryce who managed to get his teammate across the plate and the Cubs were up 1-0.
Lou then hit an inside-the-park home run to double the score and the Cubs led 2-0 after the first inning.
If the Cubs thought that this was going to be an easy night, the Braves quickly let the air out of their balloon in the second inning.
Oliver and Lucas teamed up for identical plays (shortstop to first base) for 2 quick outs.
Both pitchers went back to work and made quick work of the batters they faced until the 4th inning when again Bryce (Cubs) had a lead off double and Lou followed with a double of his own allowing Bryce to score. (Cubs 3 - Braves 0).
Ari reached on a single allowing Lou to move to third and Daniel's 2 RBI hit sent the Cubs to a 5-0 lead.
A pitching change for the Cubs in the 5th saw Lou enter the game and the Braves bats began to stir. A leadoff single by Oliver was followed by a RBI triple from Sascha and the Braves smelled a comeback (Cubs 5 - Braves 1).
A hit by Aidan allowed Sascha to score the second Braves run of the inning. Now the Braves smelled blood and were closing in . . .
Fortunately for the Cubs, Lou found his pitching and stemmed the bleeding at 2 runs.
The bottom of the fifth inning saw the Cubs almost extend their lead again but Lucas managed to close out the inning pitching under pressure and bravely got through a bases loaded situation.
Lou was dominant in the sixth as the Cubs managed to hold on for a 5 - 2 win.
If the rest of the series is as nail-biting as this one was, then we have a lot of baseball ahead of us.
These teams are very well matched, but only one will be victorious. After Game One it would be very hard to predict a winner.
